Cold pressed

Cobio’s coconut oil Kerala is cold pressed, which is possible due to the relatively low temperature during the drying of coconut and then pressing it without heat.

Cobio’s coconut oil Malaita is extra virgin, because it is extracted in the first and the only cold pressing within less than one hour of opening the coconuts.

Extra virgin

Cobio’s extra virgin coconut oil Malaita is a coconut oil of the highest quality, since it has been obtained directly from fresh coconuts solely by mechanical procedures.

Raw

The oil produced in this manner is virgin coconut oil because it has not been treated by chemicals nor heat, and contains no additives. Coconut oil obtained in this way is fresh and full of nutrients.

DME® method for processing Cobio’s coconut oil

The DME method (Direct Micro Expelling) allows for extra virgin coconut oil to be extracted within less than one hour of opening the coconuts. The result is the oil Malaita, cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil of the highest quality, which has retained its genuine flavour, original composition, and all the beneficial properties.

1. Preparation

Mature, healthy and undamaged coconuts are picked out by farmers and cracked open within 48 hours of harvesting.

2. Milling

Soon after opening the coconut, the coconut meat is separated from the shell by a rotary coconut grater. The process is known as wet-milling.

3. Drying

Freshly grated coconut meat is placed on a heated moving plate, where it is constantly turned. A fan over the drying plate maintains low temperatures, and quickly dries the coconut meat.

4. Pressing

When the coconut meat is dry, farmers extract the oil manually by cold press method. Thus obtained coconut oil is then clarified by settling for 24 hours.

5. Sedimentation

Afterwards, the farmers decant coconut oil and leave it to rest for a week. Then, the oil is decanted again, and left to settle for another three weeks. At this stage the oil is clear and suitable for canning, but it can still contain coconut particles.

DME® standard allows for fair trade

The DME® standard and strict quality control of Cobio’s coconut oil guarantee the safety of consumers and the survival and development of the traditional local communities. Taking advantage of the existing and self-sustaining resources, as well as using completely clean and simple technology free of any chemicals, helps to keep the nature intact.

In this way, DME technology plays an important role in improving the lives of local communities, because the Cobio coconut oil production enables the local farmers to earn several times more than the producers of refined coconut oil from copra, while at the same time it encourages traditional family life for workers who produce and process Cobio’s coconut oil. Only raw materials from renewable sources are being used in the process of obtaining our oil, so that the process produces no waste that can not be recycled.

DME technology allows for simultaneous production and processing of Cobio’s coconut oil on the farms on the islands in the South Pacific and along the Indian and African coasts – the home of coconut palms. DME enables the farming families to produce the highest quality coconut oil within one hour of opening the coconuts.

A truly fair-trade way

Local production and processing

DME technology places the production of Cobio’s extra virgin coconut oil back on the traditional family-owned farms on the South Pacific islands, where the coconut palms originate. Coconut palms are grown by the farming families in an organic way, without the use of synthetic fertilizers or other chemical additives.

DME enables the farming families to produce the highest quality coconut oil within one hour of opening the coconuts. DME production systems for coconut oil are located throughout the Pacific, in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, on Solomon Islands and the islands of Tonga, in Kiribati, Tuvalu, East Timor, India, and Africa.

Higher income and clean processing

DME production method plays an important role in improving the lives of local communities throughout the Pacific. Farmers producing Cobio’s coconut oil have a guaranteed income, which is several times higher than the income of producers of refined coconut oil from copra. In addition, the method encourages traditional family life and culture in the local community. Only raw materials from renewable sources are being used in the process of obtaining our oil, so that the process produces no waste that can not be recycled.
